Choosing a managed IT provider is a real commitment, they will hold the keys to your business's technology. Brochures all sound the same, so the smart move is to ask questions that force specifics. Here are the ones worth asking, grouped by what they reveal.
How do I actually reach you, and who answers? Is it a real person who knows my business, or a ticket queue and a call center? What are your guaranteed response times, and do you cover after-hours emergencies? Slow, anonymous support is the most common complaint businesses have about their MSP.
What security is included by default, and what is extra? You want multi-factor authentication, endpoint protection, patching, and backups baked into the base service, not sold as surprise add-ons after an incident. Ask how they would handle a ransomware attack or a breach.
Is pricing a flat, predictable monthly fee, or do charges pile up every time I call? How long is the contract, and what happens if it is not working out? And critically: do I own my own data, domain, and accounts? The right answer is always yes.
Do you have experience with businesses my size and in my industry? Will you proactively review and plan our technology, or only show up when something breaks? A good MSP acts like a strategic partner, not just a repair service.
It sounds odd to ask during the sales process, but ask it anyway: if we part ways, how do I get my data and accounts back? A provider who answers that openly is one you can trust.
Short version: you reach a senior person who knows your business, security is included rather than upsold, pricing is one predictable monthly figure, you own everything, and leaving (if it ever came to that) would be clean.
